This month we showcase the important work of ACCA members in the public sector. Our main interview is with Yvonne Soglo FCCA, who as director of budget analysis is supporting South Africa’s Limpopo province to ensure resources are spent effectively to the benefit of its citizens.

We also speak to Stevens Mwanje FCCA, award-winning CFO of Uganda’s National Social Security Fund. As well as boosting the fund’s financial performance, Mwanje has pushed through radical changes to bring the finance department into the modern age.

Meanwhile we continue to look at the impact of the invasion of Ukraine and, in particular, what it means for finance professionals.

For example, a huge number of businesses’ supply chains involve Russian products and services. Identifying these links in the chain and finding alternative suppliers is a massive challenge, as we see in our feature ‘Supply chain pain’. We also look at the steps accountancy firms are taking to keep operations going and to support staff in Ukraine.

Also on a skills theme, we look at the 12 competencies needed by finance professionals to succeed in green finance. As ACCA’s head of sustainability Emmeline Skelton warns: ‘Green job creation will be a huge part of the transition to net zero, and the finance community can enable business to kickstart the processes.’
