The end of the summer holidays marks the start of the school year and the return to the office. Following the Covid reset, many companies were fearing a ‘great resignation’, but instead there seems to be a ‘great reimagination’ of the world of work in progress. Post-pandemic, younger workers in particular are considering their employment options, with a new focus on prioritising less stress, more attractive working conditions and better career support when choosing jobs, as this article explores.

Our main interview this month is with Google vice president Fiona Bones FCCA, whose career has taken her from a starter position in the government’s fisheries department in Galway all the way to a top tech role based in Australia, managing a team of 260 across 23 jurisdictions. She sees technology transforming the accounting sector, most notably by improving the quality of the upstream data that is key for reporting and freeing up people to do more meaningful work.

Maura O’Neill FCCA, now a senior portfolio manager with the stockbrokers Goodbody, credits the ACCA Qualification as the launchpad of a career spanning 30 years. Recently named ACCA Ireland’s National Advocate of the Year 2021/22, she’s encouraging members to see the difference they can make by working together and collaborating in partnership with others, through participation on ACCA committees and panels as well as charity work. Find out more.

Other key content this month includes our regular technical update, with a focus on professional clearance; a feature challenging the illusion that perfectionism is a desirable quality in job candidates; and forthcoming amendments to IFRS Standards for SMEs.
