I got my career started in accounting way back in the 90s. After completing my secondary education, I was deliberating on my future career. Luckily, I got a job as an audit trainee at a local accounting firm and took the ACCA Qualification, equipping myself with logical and critical thinking during my career.
One part of my role is client and business management; I manage client expectations, understand their needs and explore business opportunities. I also manage around 40+ staff, ensuring that they are well trained and have a good career development path. Reporting on daily operations to my supervisor is another component of the role.

I enjoy working with clients as well as sharing my experiences with them. I also enjoy exchanging knowledge with my staff. My team inspires me to come up with new ideas and develop new ways of thinking.
Managing expectations can be very challenging. For example, some staff join Mazars expecting to work with our overseas and listing clients, and are disappointed when they do not handle these assignments initially.
We need to let staff know that their turn will come and, in the meantime, balance the types of clients that they handle, which involves two-way communication that is beneficial to the team.
With the emerging challenges of financial reforms and the growth of the Greater Bay Area, I see the potential of an increasing need for financial and accounting services in mainland China.
Another engine for future development is fintech. Cloud-based accounting services can be provided anytime and anywhere, and fintech includes paperless services and monetary transactions, which is an opportunity for accountants to act as a facilitator to meet the growing needs of fintech.

Paperless auditing also means more training, along with more time to become familiar with the new technology.
Over the past few years, there have been several new auditing and accounting standards. This involves communicating new procedures to clients, staff and stakeholders to ensure we get the correct information to prepare the audit documents.
I strive to maintain a work-life balance by exercising. I go running or hit the gym. This drives me to become more energetic, work harder and focus more.
Just like the ACCA motto, 'Think ahead' - keep learning, keep fit and keep an open mind.
