From an early age, I had a passion for mathematics, and this led me to pursue a career in accounting. I put in place important building blocks of experience in my early positions in audit and tax in my home city of Islamabad, in Pakistan, where I also gained my ACCA Qualification. But it is my current role in client accounting in UAE that has truly captured my interest.

Since I joined Sovereign Group in 2018, I’ve risen through the ranks. I am now client accounting manager for the Middle East and Cyprus, and have helped to take the client accounting department to new heights, expanding its range of services. I’m excited to see where my career takes me in the future.

Working across a variety of industries has been invaluable for my career development

I’ve always believed that stepping out of one’s comfort zone is necessary for growth and success. Back in Pakistan, my transition from working in audit to dealing with US sales tax required me to learn a new set of laws and regulations. This experience challenged me to think differently and expand my knowledge base. In my current role, handling accounting and taxes for UAE and Cyprus also required me to learn about the regulations of those countries, which was a daunting but rewarding experience.

Embracing challenges is essential for both personal and professional growth, and I continue to push myself out of my comfort zone. Working across a variety of industries has been invaluable for my career development and has equipped me with a diverse range of skills that I can now apply in any industry.

UAE’s constantly changing regulations can be overwhelming for our clients

Variety also offers the chance to tackle new challenges and develop a deeper understanding of different industries. This has enabled me to understand my clients’ unique needs and to provide them with effective solutions.

UAE’s constantly changing regulations can be overwhelming for our clients, so we strive to simplify the process for them. Their main concerns are often centred around compliance with VAT and the Economic Substance Regulations, as well as streamlining accounting processes.

Apart from becoming an FCCA, my most significant professional achievement has been receiving the Employee of the Year award from Sovereign Group three times in five years. While this has boosted my personal confidence as a leader, I see it as a team achievement and a testament to everyone’s hard work and dedication.

I find it immensely satisfying to identify issues and develop solutions that address them

What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to solve complex problems. I find it immensely satisfying to identify issues and develop solutions that address them. Every day presents a new challenge, so I am constantly applying my knowledge and growing.

If I weren’t an accountant, I could see myself working in a field that involves innovation and problem-solving, such as engineering. I have always been drawn to the mechanics of how things work, and I love exploring the inner workings of machines and systems. If I were an engineer, I would relish the opportunity to tackle complex problems and design innovative solutions.

In my free time, I am passionate about playing cricket and table tennis. Both are a great way to stay active and relieve stress, so when I do have the chance to hit the field or the table, I always make the most of it.
