Audit is a constant thrill for me. Every day brings a new but exciting challenge, which is the essence of working in a Big Four firm. High-performing teams, tight deadlines, changing requirements and client relationship management make for a heady combination.

I am creative, curious and playful in my aspirations. Whenever I hear about new technology, such as blockchain or AI developments, my mind immediately jumps to the world of finance and audit. I want to witness the transformation of the profession. My dream is to be a leader in an environment where maximum productivity is the norm, allowing for better work-life balance and mental wellbeing.

It’s increasingly important to identify areas in audit where technology can streamline workflows and processes, allowing teams to focus on higher-value tasks. This is especially important in retaining talented young auditors, who want more meaningful, less monotonous work. Technology integration can also sustain higher levels of performance, while making sure teams maintain a healthy work-life balance to prevent burnout.

I began my career by interning at RSA Insurance in Oman and studying ACCA. It was a great start, but my passion was always for a career in audit, so I moved to Grant Thornton, where I gained ACCA membership. Intrigued by a Big Four move, I went to KPMG Lower Gulf, and then New Zealand, where I’m now a senior audit manager at KPMG’s Auckland office.

It’s a rollercoaster ride working with large regulated and listed clients

I manage a prestigious energy infrastructure client in New Zealand, and the work is a daily motivator. It’s a rollercoaster ride working with large regulated and listed clients, especially when it involves a significant business combination transaction, alongside considerations of climate change/decarbonisation journey, price volatility, global supply constraints, harsh weather conditions and pandemic-related disruptions.

If I weren’t in audit and finance, I would have tried my hand at teaching or psychiatry. I’m fascinated by how much someone’s mental and emotional state can impact their daily lives. Helping someone overcome mental and emotional challenges and effectively giving them the opportunity to transform into the best version of themselves would be a satisfying career. Audit, though, has empowered me with opportunities to impact people through mentoring, coaching, and listening with empathy, allowing future leaders to strive and shine.
