My journey into finance and accounting began somewhat unexpectedly. Originally, my aspirations leaned towards language and translation, driven by a profound appreciation for English. However, my university major was chosen by my family, who believed that a degree in accounting would offer better job prospects.

I came to realise that accounting places a strong emphasis on logical thinking and the ability to apply reasoning to financial information and decision-making. This revelation was both surprising and reassuring, as it aligned more closely with my skills and interests, allowing me to embrace the discipline with a new perspective and enthusiasm.

The prospect of engaging with a qualification entirely in English thrilled me

I discovered ACCA during a university lecture. The prospect of engaging with a qualification entirely in English thrilled me. I embarked on the qualification and became an affiliate within two years. I thoroughly enjoyed the ACCA system because it cultivates students’ thinking ability.

My career journey began as an auditor in a local firm, before moving into management accounting, then to CFO of a consultancy business. I then became general manager of an education company specialising in ACCA, helping it to become a Gold Approved Learning Partner. I now hold several roles: I’m an industry professor at a university, a partner in a UK firm, the founder of TaoTeach Academy, a lecturer for the ACCA qualification, and a global exam marker for two major professional bodies.

Sometimes, to move higher, one must first descend, mirroring life’s ups and downs

I’ve also written four books on accounting, and among the many interests I have, I am most proud of seeing my work published. Having these books included in the Hong Kong Library Collection and seeing them in bookstores have been highlights of my career.

My career influences are varied, deeply personal, philosophical and shaped significantly by mentorship. My parents have been an unwavering source of support and inspiration throughout my journey. The guidance and encouragement from my mentor, Professor Lv, set me on the path to pursuing ACCA. And the ancient wisdom of the I Ching has profoundly influenced my approach to life and career, as it emphasises adaptability, harmony and the interconnectedness of all things.

In my spare time, I love playing golf and tennis, and especially hiking. When ascending a mountain, the journey is rarely a direct ascent to the summit; it’s more cyclical. Sometimes, to move higher, one must first descend, mirroring life’s ups and downs.
