I started my career at KPMG Malaysia straight out of university armed with a bachelor’s degree and subsequently, the ACCA qualification. I then took a leap of faith and moved to EY Singapore. The Big Four provides a strong foundation, so long as you are committed to the work, learning the ropes and not taking short cuts. Meeting a good superior who can provide guidance and direction is key. The exposure to diverse clients and complex projects equipped me with technical knowledge and a large network.

I developed a passion for finance because numbers form the core of all business operations. Additionally, I find fulfilment in professional services, where I can engage with stakeholders and clients, offering valuable solutions. The true satisfaction arises when they endorse these solutions, leading to tangible improvements in the situation.

I’m pleased to have provided valuable insights to decision-makers, earning their trust in my expertise

I’m currently a partner at GYK Group, where I collaborate closely with our managing partner, Songyao Goh. I find great satisfaction in sharing my knowledge and experience with our clients, as well as offering solutions to address their challenges. One noteworthy instance involved conducting a financial forecast for a client who was considering a business venture. The forecast revealed a potential loss due to various market and business-related factors. Consequently, the client reconsidered their decision to enter the business. I’m pleased to have provided valuable insights to decision-makers, earning their trust in my expertise and contributing to informed choices.

The ACCA qualification, along with its network of professionals, has proven to be exceptional, significantly expanding the scope of opportunities. It has established an equitable and merit-based platform for all members to engage, communicate and collaborate in exploring various opportunities collectively.

Each day I engage in activities I’m passionate about

My most significant accomplishment involves taking the initial leap into the consulting business alongside my partner. Acknowledging that it was a substantial risk, especially amid the peak of the pandemic and lacking extensive business development skills, I now realise that it’s proven a worthwhile decision. Each day I engage in activities I’m passionate about, such as interacting with others, offering solutions, building a team and steering our venture in the envisioned direction. Naturally, this journey has presented numerous challenges that we continually navigate, ultimately emerging stronger. I owe much of this success to the unwavering support of my wife and family, who have been by my side since the very beginning.

If I’d pursued a different career path, I would likely have chosen to be a historian. While I may not always recall specific details, I’m drawn to the insights and wisdom embedded in historical events. As the adage goes, ‘history always repeats itself’, emphasising the importance of learning from past mistakes.
