In our cover interview this month we meet a member whose career in hospitality has seen him live and work in Mozambique, Zambia and now Rwanda. Born in Pakistan and raised in Kenya where he started his working life, Shehzad Rajani FCCA is financial controller at Radisson Blu Hotel & Convention Centre in the capital Kigali from where he also oversees the financial operations of six more hotels in three other countries. ‘Running a hotel is like running five to six medium-sized businesses at once,’ he explains. Read his story.

In our public sector section, we look at the findings of a new ACCA report into public financial management performance (PFM) in Africa. With spotlights on key institutions across Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and Mauritius, the report examines the factors undermining systems and impeding reforms, and offers 15 recommendations for enhancing performance. Read more about the findings.

PFM performance and reform featured prominently at ACCA’s recent virtual Africa public sector conference, where experts from across the continent also discussed the debt and inflation crisis, and sustainability reporting. Find out more in our writeup.

Sustainability reporting is an important part of the work of Jamiu Olakisan FCCA, who we interview this month. As a partner in EY Nigeria and assurance leader for West Africa, he discusses the opportunities ahead and why teaching remains his ‘first love’.

Continuing the sustainability theme, we look at why some organisations are embedding nature-related disclosures in their reporting. Still at the early stages of adoption, recommendations from the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures are paving the way for increased visibility on companies’ impacts on nature.

Finally, on a celebratory note: ACCA has announced its latest membership figures of more than 250,000 in its 120th anniversary year. Watch the video and read the ACCA president’s column this month to find out more.
