Among Ghana’s many challenges, economic instability is the paramount concern. We are grappling with high levels of inflation, especially in food prices, along with high levels of income and indirect taxes, as well as rising interest rates, all of which combine to make the cost of living increasingly burdensome for many Ghanaians. The country also faces infrastructure deficiencies such as inadequate public transportation and energy, which impede economic development. Another worrying concern is the perceived decline in patriotism and accountability, usually fuelled by societal elements that perpetuate corrupt practices.

However, the country possesses significant opportunities for growth and development. Ghana has a stable political system and vast natural resources, which include the recent discovery of lithium. There are also many young Ghanaians eager to offer their strength and expertise to bring positive change to the country’s fortunes.

A commitment to excellence in every facet of life is my guiding principle

My mantra is: diligence in all! This encapsulates a commitment to excellence and dedication in every facet of life. It is a guiding principle that reminds me to continually self-reflect, improve and approach all tasks, whether large or small, with meticulousness.

My proudest achievement is the reputation I gained at my previous employer. I showed a dedication to excellence, a diligent work ethic and an innovative approach to my work, which resulted in glowing endorsements. These ultimately helped me secure my current role as a tax specialist for AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana), where I use my expertise to minimise the company’s tax liabilities.

What I enjoy most about my job is analysing accounting transactions and non-accounting data for their tax implications. I also like to use my analysis to make recommendations that help the business with strategic decision-making.

My career goals are to continue improving, to reach the pinnacle of management and be trusted to manage the group’s tax exposures. I also aspire to be a potent voice in economic development, making meaningful contributions that resonate both locally and across the continent.

I immersed myself in taxation and transfer pricing and cultivated a wealth of knowledge

From an early age, I was drawn to numbers and anything that required logical reasoning. I studied economics at university, but joining KPMG Ghana as a graduate trainee was a pivotal moment that propelled my career forward. At KPMG I immersed myself in taxation and transfer pricing work and cultivated a wealth of knowledge. Eventually, I took a bold leap to join AngloGold Ashanti.

If I hadn’t chosen accountancy, I would have gone into IT. With my passion for creativity and innovation, software engineering would have offered an alternative avenue to harness my joy in creative problem-solving. However, my childhood aspiration was to be a professional footballer. I imagined myself donning the jersey of Chelsea FC and winning the World Cup with the Black Stars of Ghana!

If I could make laws, I would increase the tax-deductible benefits allocated to corporations that actively train and employ young graduates. I would extend this to businesses that invest in equipping young people with technical skills that are in global demand in order to bolster Ghana’s economic empowerment.

When I am not at work, I love spending time with my wife and my son, especially when we are travelling together. I also enjoy canvas painting, tending to my garden and watching my favourite football team – you guessed it, Chelsea FC.
