This month, there is a real ‘careers’ feel to the edition as inevitably thoughts turn towards job prospects at the beginning of a new year. We are running two articles that take a deep dive into salary expectations on both sides of the Atlantic. In the first, which looks at salaries in the Americas, we learn that the North American jobs market prioritises quality, while skills shortages continue in the Caribbean. In the second, we look at what is happening in Europe, where apparently recruiters are cautious, but not in retreat. If you are in the market for a new role, please check out ACCA’s global career support hub for the latest positions.
This month, our main interview is with Bank of Ireland’s Michelle McGreal FCCA, who pinpoints diversity and collaboration as key to good governance. The newly appointed group chief internal auditor brings to this key role the wealth of experience and the credentials you’d expect. But her CV is more than just a relentless focus on governance and controls, revealing an unusual breadth of experience. Find out more.
We are also delighted to announce ACCA’s latest Advocates of the Year in the US and Canada. The newest recipient of the award in the US, Kayode Yusuf FCCA, relocated to the country in 2011, having started his career with PwC in Nigeria. Now living and working in Boston as financial controller at Entegris, a manufacturing company, he plays an active role in ACCA, supporting local students and ACCA members with their career journeys and professional experience.
Meanwhile, in Canada, this year’s advocate is Mohamed Irshad FCCA, currently CFO of the Prosumer Software business at Schneider Electric, based in Toronto, Canada. Irshad’s advocacy for ACCA began soon after he moved to Canada from Paris, where he had been working as an internal auditor for Schneider.
The final piece of this month’s careers jigsaw focuses on willpower. In fact, it looks at why willpower isn’t enough, and how choosing the right tactics for the task at hand is the most effective way to accomplish it.
In the nonprofit sector, demonstrating positive outcomes is a fundraising must-have. But how can finance professionals do this? Being able to spot a signal within the noise of all the data pinging around an organisation is critical to identifying an issue that might affect performance or compliance with donor requirements. Find out more.
In Europe, the latest environmental, social and governance standards see a reduction in requirements. This may be welcome to many businesses, but Accountancy Europe and other experts have warned that the uncertainty prompted by adapting previously approved standards generates risk. Find out more.
Finally, and returning to the careers theme, ACCA’s global survey reveals that tax accountants are the most trusted. But the survey also reveals why taxpayers comply, complain and sometimes cheat.
