I started my career in 2012 after graduating from Tunku Abdul Rahman College. While I was waiting for the results of my final ACCA exam, I was fortunate enough to join PwC, where I mainly focused on auditing the financial services industry. I now work at BNP Paribas Malaysia, a subsidiary of one of the largest banks in Europe. I really enjoy collaborating with the various business units to support our ambition. When a project is completed, the feeling of accomplishment is extremely rewarding.

I believe the next big trend in the banking industry is digital disruption – something many workplaces have underestimated. Although the full impact is still difficult to measure, it’s crucial that we upskill and focus on tasks that machines cannot perform, such as storytelling with a human touch. In addition, today’s Gen Z workforce will not be ready for the job market unless they understand their purpose. It’s our responsibility, as leaders, to explain why they should stay with us, what they can learn from us and how they can grow.

It’s important for us to be aware that differences are normal and to treat one another with respect

I truly believe that today’s finance professional does far more than merely crunch numbers. We must focus on storytelling and providing strategic advice, because finance is involved in virtually every key decision a company makes. Consequently, finance input is both crucial and indispensable, which is why I enjoy it so much.

I believe empathy is an often‑underrated soft skill that we need in the workplace, and I learned its value from my own family. Empathy is especially critical in Malaysia, a multiracial country. You have probably experienced, at least once, feeling isolated in a conversation because others think you are different from them. I dislike seeing that happen – to myself or to anyone else – so it’s important for us to be aware that differences are normal and to treat one another with respect.

One of my proudest achievements came early in my career, when I was given the opportunity to chair a meeting with 20 attendees. Even today I still remember that moment; it proved that nothing is impossible, as long as we tell ourselves we can do it. This may be surpassed, however, when I become a father in February.

I listen to ‘The Other Side’ whenever I’m planning a career move

I enjoy watching movies because a film requires a significant amount of effort to create and it conveys the values the director wants to bring to the audience. My favourite movie is The Greatest Showman, and my favourite song from it is the duet ‘The Other Side’. I always listen to that song whenever I’m planning a career move, as it lets me rethink and reset. I recommend that you watch the film and read the lyrics of the song.

If I weren’t an accountant, I’d probably be an equity trader. It taps into the part of me that enjoys uncovering a hidden gem in the stock market. After all, numbers tell stories.
