I majored in mining and mineral engineering at university and actually had minimal knowledge of accounting when I graduated. However, as I was completing my university studies, I had the opportunity to interview with Big Four firms and was impressed by the exceptional learning curve and exposure they provided in early career days.

I was lucky to land my first job with KPMG and began thinking about the skills I would need to progress. It soon became clear that the ACCA qualification was the answer and it became the foundation of my career. I enjoyed the challenge, and appreciated firsthand what was required to achieve the qualification, which I gained in 2021.

AI is conquering the corporate world. Businesses are being pushed to be more agile in responding to changing dynamics, and new techniques are being demanded in the market. We will see that clerical work will be increasingly left to AI, which will improve speed and accuracy, with insights quickly provided. Finance personnel will have more time and resources, which will allow for more concentration on improving strategies for their businesses. However, organisations must critically analyse the risks, and avoid developing a high dependence on AI tools.

I gained courage and confidence that I could conquer any challenges

I stepped out of my comfort zone when I began managing client assignments end-to-end quite early in my career. Managing client expectations to tight deadlines was daunting, but this period built inside me the courage and confidence that I can conquer any challenges ahead of me, both at work and in my daily life.

This is my favourite saying: ‘No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid’. It means a lot to me because my career path has diverged somewhat from my original educational background. It reinforces my belief that determination and consistency can open doors, regardless of where you start.

I am currently working in the brewing industry, dealing with the company’s tax affairs. What I enjoy most about the role is that I am able to practise what I have learned over the years while ensuring the business remains compliant and sees growth.

My biggest achievement has been seeing myself grow professionally

My biggest achievement is not one thing. Rather, it has been seeing myself grow professionally and accomplish the goals I have set myself in life.

If I had law-making powers, I would legislate to promote investment in Tanzania. Increased investment would enable the economy to achieve greater economic growth, and this would eventually make our citizens happier.

If I hadn’t joined the accounting profession, I would have liked to have been an engineer – specifically in the mining sector, where I had hopes of working when I was younger.

When I am not at work, I enjoy running. I also love to travel with family and friends, especially adventure trips, hiking trails or in national parks. To relax I watch documentaries on TV or go swimming.
