The recent COP 27 climate change conference held in Egypt stressed the need to drastically reduce emissions and focus on meaningful climate action among participating nations. Our focus in AB is to highlight the role of organisations and their finance teams in meeting their sustainability agendas and net-zero ambitions. Read our articles Accountants lead on green change and Green light for sustainability

Against this background, we meet Zimbabwean Rodney Ndamba FCCA, founder of the Institute for Sustainability Africa. When he first encountered the concept of sustainability as an ACCA student more than two decades ago, it was addressed as just one of a handful of emerging issues. Now he’s on a mission to drive non-financial reporting across the continent.

Our second interviewee is in the thick of another headline-fuelling event. Ghanaian Richard Torsu FCCA swapped a life in banking in Accra to become FD of the Confederation of African Football, based in Cairo, Egypt. Now with five African teams to support at the men’s World Cup tournament in Qatar, he discusses football, finance and modernising the organisation.

Elsewhere, we explore the findings of a joint ACCA report conducted with the Pan African Federation of Accountants, which looks at how accountants and finance professionals can empower the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement.

Finally, we announce the winners of ACCA’s inaugural public sector advocates awards. We’ll be talking to the global winner, Nigerian Taiye Adedeji ACCA, of Lagos State Treasury, in more depth in an interview early in 2023.

And don’t forget you can earn up to 15 CPD units by listening on demand to our Accounting for the Future conference. The event has so far attracted 39,000 registrants (and climbing), and the agenda offers something for everyone.

CPD is also available this month through articles on intangible assets, double materiality and how to succeed as a new manager. Also, look out for our CPD special edition due to be published in December.
