Setting up on their own account, be it in business or practice, is a dream many professional accountants share. This month, we meet two members who have taken the plunge. Our main interview is with Solomon Gizaw Kebede FCCA who co-founded the first accounting and audit partnership in Ethiopia almost two decades ago. In our article, he discusses the highs and lows of his journey and his involvement in capacity building in Africa’s fastest growing economy.
We also meet a young entrepreneur with a bold vision to help integrate healthcare in Nigeria. Doctor-turned-accountant Dami Adeyemi-Levites ACCA is combining his medical background and the skills he gained from the ACCA Qualification to start up his own healthtech business. It’s early days and there’s much to be done but he has high hopes.
Also this month, a new report from ACCA brings the good news that finance professionals are the most trusted professionals for tax advice – valued above lawyers, politicians and tax authorities. Among the 14 countries outside of the G20 that were surveyed, the highest level of trust was registered in Nigeria, where respondents gave accountants an 80.4% trust score. Find out more.
In our careers section, business psychologist Jess Baker looks at how employees can regain their motivation and re-engage with their work. And we find out how the intensity of a smile can make or break a deal.
We also start a new series that uses graphics to help illustrate some of the key trends in technology. This month, we look at tech stocks, their performance as an asset class, the key players and the role of the Big Four in the sector.
Finally, don’t forget to sign up for our virtual Accounting for the Future conference, to earn up to 15 free CPD units. This year’s event runs from 29 November to 1 December.
