Growing up, I admired my mum’s ethics and commitment in her role as a banker. I knew from that point on I wanted to follow a similar path. Over the years that dream evolved and today I am an experienced senior associate at KPMG Nigeria.

I began as an intern in 2021, and it has been a rewarding career ever since. I have gone from being a newbie to leading audit engagements while actively engaging with key management.

I am naturally introverted and found it challenging to express myself in group settings. However, I intentionally pushed myself to seek opportunities for public speaking, including delivering training sessions. Over time, my confidence and communication skills improved significantly, and today I tutor students at the ACCA applied skills level, something I would previously never have imagined being able to do.

Practitioners continuously seek to add value and make a meaningful impact

Accountants can help businesses navigate difficult times by looking beyond the historical numbers and helping owners make better decisions. Our profession can help in managing cashflow and costs, and identifying risks and opportunities for the future. By turning financial information into practical advice, accountants give owners confidence when making tough decisions, especially with the recent impact of destabilising economic and technological developments.

My time in practice has opened many doors. I am excited about where the future may lead and would embrace the diversity that comes with working in the corporate world. However, I have no doubt that the practitioner in me will remain, continuously seeking ways to add value and make a meaningful impact.

What I enjoy most about my job is the variety and continuous learning. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to broaden my knowledge and skills, despite the stringent timelines and pressures. I also like collaborating with many different stakeholders, which allows me to build relationships and work towards common goals.

I believe in pursuing excellence in everything I do

Anything worth doing is worth doing well. That sentiment influences how I approach both life and my career, as I believe in pursuing excellence in everything I do. I constantly challenge myself to go beyond the minimum, because great results are achieved through that extra effort. This mindset has pushed me, as the difference between good and exceptional often lies in a willingness to do more than what is required.

If I could pass a law, I would introduce a worldwide four-day working week. We spend a significant portion of our lives working, so it is important to have enough time for family, personal interests and wellbeing. A shorter week would give people more opportunities to pursue hobbies, strengthen relationships and recharge mentally and physically. This would lead to a healthier and more balanced lifestyle for people, creating happier, more motivated and more productive individuals.

If I weren’t an accountant, I would probably be a teacher. I like to share knowledge, and help others learn and grow. There’s a great sense of fulfilment in seeing someone’s eyes light up as they gain a new understanding of something they once found difficult.

Outside of work, I spend quality time with my family and friends. Whether it is watching a movie, visiting new places or simply enjoying each other’s company, these moments keep me grounded and remind me of the true essence of life.
